FYI: Try this if an eBook or eTextbook in your eLearn course isn't working too.

How Do I Get on the Campus WiFi on My New Laptop?

If you are using the campus WiFi for the first time on a new laptop you need to check a few things if you are not getting connected.

1.) Check to make sure any WiFi buttons on your laptop are turned on. This button has a symbol that looks like this ((i)) and it usually has a blue glow.
2.) You must have current anti-virus software. The Wi-Fi blocks user without it.
3.) Check your Internet Explorer settings. [No. It can't be another browser. It won't work.]

On the browser toolbar click: Tools - Internet Options - Advanced. Scroll to Security settings and uncheck the settings that ask for certificates and the box in front of Use SSL 3.0.

Then restart your laptop and try clicking on Internet Explorer again.

I Can't Get into MyLabsPlus...MyReadingLab...MyMathLab...? Where Can I Get Help?

You can get help with all your Pearson accounts on the Pearson website. When you go to the Pearson website, you will see a Support link in the top blue header, far right. Click on it to see a phone number in the center of the Support page. Here is the link to their Support Website, http://247support.custhelp.com/. This website gives you a choice to call, email, chat or look through FAQ(Frequently Asked Questions) for help with your Pearson products and MyLabsPlus content.

Calling CDE(Center for Distributed Education) will direct you to this information. CDE can help you with eLearn navigation and eLearn issues but are not able to help you with Pearson or other linked websites within eLearn.

How can I put an email in the eLearn dropbox?

This struck me as an odd request from an instructor since email is not an option for the eLearn dropbox. My work-around is to use the Snipping Tool. It is available through the Operating System called Windows 7 which is on all of our library computers. Here is how you use it.
  1. First login to eLearn, the Course and create and/or open your email draft and leave it open.
  2. Go to the START menu, Click Programs, Click Accessories, Click Snipping Tool.
  3. Use the crossbar from the snipping tool to select the email image.
  4. Then name and save the image as a GIF. Note that this image will be saved in the Pictures folder on the computer unless you choose to save it in another location.
  5. Next, go to your Dropbox and select the assignment folder for this assignment.
  6. Browse to the image in the Picture folder.
  7. Select it and click the Upload button.
  8. This will place the email image in the dropbox and you can write a note to the instructor before you submit it if you like.
The note might say, "If this is wrong please contact Lori Warren the Coordinator of Instructional Services in the Chattanooga State Library. Her number is 423-697-3292. She would really like to know  the correct way to place an email in the dropbox. : ) ."

My Links Aren't Working in eLearn. What Is Happening?

If you are receiving errors while working in eLearn,  click the link again to see if the page will refresh (this may take a few clicks). We have noticed that usually, after an error, giving the page a few seconds and trying again will open the page.
If you are taking tests or quizzes in eLearn and the system locks up when submitting a test, log out of eLearn and log back into eLearn. If you still have time left to finish the test, reenter the test and try to submit again. If this doesn’t work, please contact CDE with the following information:

• Your name

• The Course number where this problem occurs—including the section number (example: ENGL 1010 015)

• The name of the test where the problem occurs

CDE will then try to submit the test for the student. When this happens, also communicate with your instructor about the problem.

WileyPlus Is Not Opening on This Library Computer. Why?

Check the Internet Explorer or browser Tools to see if the computer's Pop-up Blocker is on. If it it is, turn it off. Sometimes links to WileyPlus and other online applications are set to open in a new window. This can be disabled if the Pop-Up Blocker is on. Once you turn the Pop-up Blocker off go back into eLearn and click on the link to your WileyPlus content. It should open now. If you are in the library, ask at the Help Desk for more assistance. Send an email to your instructor or contact CDE at 697-2592 if you have more problems.

Why Won't My Music or Videos Play From My eTextbook in eLearn?

The reason they may not be playing is that you are using a browser such as Internet Explorer, that doesn't support the media files that are linked in the eTextbook. eTextbooks by Pearson work best with Mozilla Firefox. These eTextbooks have links to a variety of outside media files and players. These files & players have better support in Firefox. In the eLearn course, MUS 1030-Music Appreciation DVC, students need to use the Firefox browser.

This Document in My eLearn Course Content Won't Print. When Saved to the Desktop It Has the File Extension .PRN. What is a PRN file?

A PRN file is a special type of file that contains instructions for a printer. It tells the printer what to print on the page, what printer to use and other controls. We recently had a nursing student trying to print a document from eLearn with this extension. If your document has this extension and does not want to print on the library print management system, ask to print from a computer that has Adobe Acrobat 8 or 9 on it. This software will print the .PRN file extension files. The computers in the library with Adobe Acrobat include the ADA computers, the classroom computers and the two multimedia computers in the conference/multimedia studio room.

Note: These files will look funny when you try to open them in Word and don't allow you to use Word to print. They can't be copied and pasted in notepad or opened to print either.

How Do I Set My eLearn Email to Include an Original Email?

To improve the communication between you and you instructor be sure to include original emails when you ask for additional advise on any assignment. To do this go into your eLearn settings and check the box that says "include original email in replies."

Here are the steps to do this:

Login to eLearn
Click on "email" in blue toolbar.
Click on "settings".
Click on "include original email in replies".
Click "Save" located top, far right.

This is a great lesson in two-way communication and keeping a dialog open between you and your instructor.

How Can I Turn Off the Green Dot if I Do Not Want Other Classmates to Know I'm Online?

In eLearn on your My Home page you have a Preferences link under My Settings. Click on the Preference's link. This opens a window that lets you select whether or not you want to be seen online when you are logged into eLearn.
Select: Always appear offline.

How Did My Classmate Know I Was Online & How Did He Get My Number?

In eLearn there is a Profile box on your My Home page. When you fill out the information there, it is visible to all the other students in your class through Classlist. To find out if other students are online you can or they can go to the Classlist to see if a green dot appears next to any of the students' names. The green dot means the student is logged into the class. If you click on the profile icon next to the person's name you can see the person's profile. This includes everything they have added to their Profile.

This profile is not for instructor's eyes only. Everyone in the class sees it.

What Is The Assessments Link in eLearn?

This is a place where your instructor has set up quizzes for you to take. The quizzes are usually dated and time stamped. Which means you can only take them during the times the instructors give you. If you try to take it early or late the system won't let you take it.

Something to remember before you take a quiz is to make sure that the pop-up blocker is off on the computer you are using. The library computers usually have the pop-blocker on, so you need to turn it off by going to the browser (IE, Safari, FoxFire...) and clicking on Tools, Pop-Up Blocker and Turn Off Pop-Up Blocker.

It also helps if you take your quizzes in a quiet place where you will not be distracted. I don't advise taking them around children, wives, siblings, parents, husbands or friends visiting. They will always need something the minute you start the quiz. It is a common phenomenon.

What's the Discussions Link for in eLearn?

The Discussions' link or feature can be used in different ways. It takes you to an area in eLearn where students can post responses or opinions about topics the instructor has introduced in class. Some instructors use it as a place to answer student questions about assignments or lectures. Using the Discussions tool, you can post comments or questions and reply to comments made by other students. Some instructors even encourage students to use it as a place where students can help each other.

Remember to be polite, check your spelling and grammar before you submit your comments and questions. Also, keep in mind that your instructors are not available 24/7. They have a life, family and children. They will answer any question posted during office hours. Don't expect them to be at a computer in eLearn at 11pm or 2am in the morning.

What Goes into the eLearn Dropbox?

The dropbox began as a place to upload documents or submit assignments but has become much more. Many instructors have added new items in the dropbox folders that relate to your assignments and how you are graded. It is also a place where instructors have placed links to videos related to assignments; added links to quizzes created on other websites; stored your rubrics for grading your assignment and added attachments they want you to download. You might even find instructions for your assignments and forms they want you to fill out and submit.

One thing to remember is this. Your submissions to the drop box are logged or dated at the time they are submitted. If you miss the deadline your item may not upload. Many instructors allow only one submission per assignment others set up features in the drop box that allow you to revise and resubmit assignments. Your original document and each revised version will be saved with teachers comments.

How Many Email Accounts Do I Have and What Gets Sent Where?

All students have a my.chattanoogastate.edu or student email account. This is the email account that the college uses to send official information to students. This is where the library sends overdue notices. To get to it you can login to TigerWeb and click on the blue paw print icon at the top right of your screen. When you click on the paw another login appears. To find out what your username is see the information in the New Student Email box under the row of icons at the top of the page.

The other email accounts are in eLearn. eLearn email is closed to outside email from public email services. The emails are from instructors and other classmates. This is the email account you should use to communicate and send things to your instructor and to other students for group projects in individual classes.

Why Do I See Different Emails in My eLearn Email on "My Home" email and My Individual eLearn Class Emails?

Click on the "email" link that appears on the blue toolbar on the opening page and in each individual online class you are taking in eLearn. When you do you will see a "Filter By" setting in each. You can set the "Filter By" setting in each class and on your main page to show "all messages" or "all course messages", or "messages by individual classes".

If your settings are different you will have some email messages appearing where others don't. Why would you want these options? Some people like to keep class email messages separated by classes when they are working so they don't get classmate messages confused. They set the opening "My Home" page with the "all Messages" to check all their messages for all online classes at one time.

I Don't See Any Email Messages When I Open My eLearn Email. Where Are They?

You are probably using a small monitor screen right now. Click and hold down on the top of the frame right above the words, "Message Preview" and drag the box edge down. When you click and hold the edge of the frame you should see a vertical double arrow telling you that the frame is adjustable. This will open the box up more so you can see the emails in your inbox. Click on the individual email subject link in blue to open the emails. Use the scroll bar to the right of the email window to scroll down and see more emails. There is also a scroll bar next to the Message Preview box you can use to view more of your individual message.

I Can Send E-Mail Using Classlist But Where Is the Inbox to Get Mail Sent From Classlist?

In the blue toolbar at the top left of your eLearn course web page there is a link called, email. Click it to find all emails sent within your courses from instructors and from CDE.

Where Can I Go to Get Help with eLearn?

There are several places online and on campus where you can get help with learning eLearn and other online courses. In the library the Help Desk and Reference Desk have handouts provided by CDE that will guide you through several questions. The handouts also have contact information on who to see for password problems, log-in problems or technical problems. The library staff regularly attends workshops on eLearn and we can help when you are in the library.

Upstairs in the IMC building above the library in the CDE office, you can find people to help you. If you are new or just need to refresh your online class skills, take an online learning orientation workshop. Check here at www.chattanoogastate.edu/cde for dates and times. These workshops are highly recommended for successful online class experiences.

The Quiz I'm Suppose to Take in eLearn Says I Can't Take It That the Time Is Up. Why?

It may be that you got the time and date for taking the quiz wrong. Double check your syllabus, checklist or course content for this. If you check and you are correct on the time and date...your instructor may have forgotten to change the date from the previous year. Look and see if the year in the date posted with the quiz has last year's date. If it does email your instructor and let him know nicely that he/she forgot to reset it. You may also want to check your eLearn email & classlist email to see if your instructor has already been informed about the quiz situation and if he/she has emailed you with an update on when the quiz will be available.
