Let me say up front that using LinkedIn for career development was not my idea. Needing career advice about a sticky situation last year, I wrote to J.T. and Dale from Talk Jobs. I really admire their solid career advice and I make it a practice to read their column every Sunday in the Chattanooga Times Free Press.
They responded to my email right away and recommended that I begin to write recommendations for the people that I supervise and that I collaborate with on group projects. Their sage advice is responsible for my current goals to speak up for my coworkers, former students and student workers on a regular bases using LinkedIn.
Using LinkedIn allows me as a supervisor to show my appreciation for the students that have contributed so much to the success of the Information Commons. Each worker has spent many hours training on the college's various online applications and are seasoned students. Their personal experience taking courses, speaking with faculty and attending campus orientations has made the library a vital communication and technology center for all students.
Since the budget is tight and I am unable to reward them for their service with advancement or a pay raise, I hope that my recommendations will help them gain the employment that they have earned.
