The following are a few of the top issues and tips on how to fix them recommended by the library's computer consultant.
With Vista in priority order:
Priority Note: First thing you should do is look for the Hard Switch that turns on and off the wireless Network card. It is usually located on the front edge of the laptop keyboard. Make sure it is turned On.
1. Turn off IPv6 (In the Properties of the Network card). Rebooting is not necessary. IP version 6 is incompatible with our Wireless and it could interfere with accessing some of our library databases. To get to this location right click on the Wireless Network Connection icon (two computers overlapping at the right side of the START bar). Right click on the Wireless Network Connection to get an alternative menu. Select Properties. Under General tab, Scroll down and look for Microsoft TCP/Ip version 6 (IP6v)and deselect it. Click OK.
2. Make sure the student’s anti-virus program is up to date. The student is in a “Catch-22”: since the anti-virus program is out of date he can’t logon to the WIFI to get updates because the WIFI won’t let him logon because the anti-virus is out of date.
At this point, you may have to tell the student to go to following hot spots: McDonalds, Krystals, or Panera Bread to access the Internet and update their anti-virus program.
3. Web Site Certificate: Open up Internet Explorer (no other browser will fix this). Go to Tools—Internet Options—Advanced Tab (far right of screen)—Scroll down to Security section (Golden lock beside it)—Uncheck the following: Check for Publisher’s Certificate Revocation and Check for Server Certificate Revocation. Once you are able to logon, please go back to Options and re-check these two boxes to guard against phishing.
4. Check the computer’s clock and make sure it’s date and time are correct (do this before doing number 3.) I had this problem once and it took me a while to figure out until I Googled it.
5. Turn off all pop-up blockers from Internet Explorer and Google. The above fixes can take care of about 98 + percent of CSTCC connection issues with Windows Vista.
