Can You Tell Me About Financial Aid for Summer 2011 Classes?

Financial Aid sent an email this week (Spring Break) to all students, below is a copy of the email. Summer aid unfortunately is very confusing this year with the new federal guidelines,
"the best advice to give a student who attended fall and spring is they must be prepared to pay their own fees and receive financial aid as a reimbursement." - Jeanne Hinchee

Financial aid students will not be required to turn in a summer aid request for the upcoming summer semester. The Financial Aid Office will automatically review a student’s eligibility for summer aid as they register for summer classes. Anticipate ten working days between the day you register and the day the Financial Aid Office updates your record to notify you of your eligibility. The procedures for determining if a student is eligible may depend on final spring grades. If so, the student must be prepared to pay their fees and receive financial aid as a reimbursement if it is determined they are eligible for summer aid. Please review the process below as it describes how students will be notified of their eligibility for summer aid. If you have additional questions, please see an enrollment service counselor in the student center.

Step 1: Student registers for summer classes

Step 2: Financial aid pulls a list of students registered and reviews their eligibility for summer aid

Step 3: The Financial Aid Office will update the student’s TigerWeb account in the following manner:

• A ‘Summer Aid’ code will be placed on the ‘Student Requirements’ tab on the self-service account, after reviewing eligibility for summer aid. To locate the Student Requirements Tab, select Financial Aid tab, Financial Aid status, and Eligibility link.

• If the student is eligible for aid and no further review is needed, the status beside the Summer Aid code will be marked complete. The student will be able to see summer awards.

• If the student is not eligible for aid and no further review is needed, the status beside the Summer Aid code will be marked complete, and an Active Message will appear on the students Financial Aid Status page explaining why the student is not eligible for summer aid.

• If the Financial Aid Office cannot determine the student’s eligibility and additional information is needed, such as final spring grades, the status will be updated to ‘pending review’ and an Active Message will appear on the students Financial Aid status page explaining what is needed before summer aid can be determined.
o A student that has a status of ‘pending review’ must be prepared to pay their fees to hold their classes for the summer semester. If a student is determined eligible after the summer semester begins, the student will receive financial aid as a reimbursement.
